What is PNF?

PNF or Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, is a method sometimes used in our mobility and flexibility classes to create a more active and passive range of motion. In PNF stretching, we work to engage a muscle, or group of muscles while we are in a stretched out position. This engagement causes our muscles to isometrically contract while being in a stretched position, which allows us to increase our active range of motion. Following this isometric contraction, you'll release and passively stretch once again. Usually in this second passive stretch you'll be able to go significantly deeper than the first time, which also increases your passive range of motion. With PNF we are addressing not only the muscular system but the neuromuscular system. Essentially we are “telling” our body it is safe to be both active, and in a position of flexibility at the same time. This tool is a great compliment to any current physical activity or a wonderful place to start as a beginner wanting to work on increasing flexibility.
