Why is it Important to take classes like Barre, Yoga Sculpt and Strength and Mobility?

Our muscles thrive off a mix of variety, and specificity. Our bodies are adaptive. At FlowFit, we are proud to have a carefully curated mix of strength and conditioning formats to help complement our slow-twitch muscle focused formats such as Power Yoga and Mobility.

It is important to work both your slow-twitch and fast-twitch muscle fibers. Our slow-twitch fibers help us with balance, stability and endurance, while our fast twitch fibers help us with power and explosive strength. While these things might not seem important if you are not a competitive athlete, they most certainly are! Recent research tells us that is not only muscle tone and size that keeps us healthy as we age, but more importantly actually is the power output of our muscles. In other words, if you want to keep moving and grooving into your old age, you absolutely want to strengthen your muscles in a fast-twitch capacity! In addition, lifting weights is one of the only ways to increase bone density, something else that degenerates rapidly with age.

In addition to this importance of variety in your movement routine, we love the addition of Barre because it helps with muscle activation. You probably hear your Power Yoga instructors talk about “engaging your core” and “engaging your glutes” but the “how” behind these phrases is very much a learned skill. We use things like pulsing and active range of motion to help teach us to turn on our muscles on command, and that is one of the most powerful tools you can put in your toolbelt. Truly everything you have ever dreamed of being able to do is available to you once you master the activation of your musculature! If you haven’t tried out Yoga Sculpt, Barre Fusion or Strength and Mobility yet, schedule one this week! Our encouraging strength instructors will give you options for every level and help you with your form. What are you waiting for? Get your booty to your mat!
